Roof Leaks: Techniques To Locate Them

Detecting roof leaks can be tricky. As summer is approaching, so are those Midwest thunderstorms. If you find yourself noticing roof problems, taking action immediately can prevent most costly repairs and replacements. Here’s what you can do if you find a leak this summer.

First, locate where the roof leak is coming from:

Roof leaks are notorious for being a bit of a mystery. It takes some inspection skills to find the source. Some common places to find leaks include poorly sealed chimneys, roof vents, or skylights, along the intersection of roof planes, or a broken shingle.

Techniques to find roof leaks:

There’s a few techniques you can use to locate the source of a roof leak. Safely enter the attic with a flashlight, shine the light upward trying to find where the hole is. If it’s been dry, look for water damage marks or damp areas. If it’s currently raining, follow the dampness and any sounds of dripping water. Place a bucket under the hole once you find it.

Another technique is to have one person on the roof, methodically hosing down the roof while the other is safely in the attic waiting for the water to come through. Once the leak is located, circle it with some chalk and stick a nail safely into the hole.

Calling a professional:

Keep in mind that going up on the roof can be dangerous, especially if you do not have the right equipment. It’s imperative that you call a roofing contractor right away whether you found the source or not. Coleman’s Contractors offers free inspections.
